An alleged drunk driver was involved in two collisions before police caught up to him after he tried to drive away from the second crash on York Boulevard.

Police responded to a hit-and-run crash at Dundurn Street North and York Boulevard around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday. A Ford F-150 pickup truck had rear-ended a Ford Focus stopped at a red light.

While officers were at that collision scene, they caught wind of the same pickup involved in a second crash at York and Old Guelph Road. Witnesses saw the driver and took his keys out of the ignition because he was trying to drive away again, police allege.

The pickup was badly damaged. The driver appeared impaired and hurt; paramedics took him to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Police have charged a 55-year-old Dundas man with impaired driving, having over 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, and failing to remain. He was released on a promise to appear in court.
