A 69-year-old Burlington man has died of injuries he sustained when a wheel that had flown off a transport truck hit his SUV.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a set of two wheels came off a truck travelling southbound on Hwy. 400, just north of King Rd., around 9:18 a.m. Wednesday.

The wheels bounced into the northbound lanes, where one of them hit the SUV’s windshield and roof.

The SUV’s driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, the OPP announced that the man had died.

It was not immediately clear why the wheels came off the transport truck. Investigators will be looking into whether the truck was properly maintained and if the tires were recently changed, Schmidt said.

The truck was carrying a full load of lumber and continued for about two kilometres after losing the tires. It was not clear whether the truck driver knew what had happened.

Hwy. 400 was closed at King Rd. for the investigation but reopened just before 1:20 p.m.
