He approached an ambulance, but paramedics stopped him, police say

Police have arrested a Hamilton man in relation to the theft of a taxi cab at King and James downtown. Police say he approached an ambulance too. It happened just after 7 a.m. Wednesday.
A 36-year-old Hamilton man is charged after police say he tried to climb into an ambulance, then stole a nearby taxi cab at a busy downtown intersection.
Police responded to what was first reported as a car jacking at James Street North and King Street East just after 7 a.m. Wednesday.
They heard a man had tried to get into an ambulance while it was stopped at the intersection. When paramedics stopped him, he went to a taxi and told the driver to get out of the car, police say.
The driver did, and the man drove away in the cab. There were no threats of violence, police said in a media release.
Officers searched the area for a suspect and the stolen taxi. They found the suspect near Robert Street and John Street North — less than a kilometre away.
Const. Steve Welton said it’s unclear if the man was trying to steal the ambulance too.
“He never made any statements or demands to the paramedics,” Welton said. “He opened the door to find the paramedics inside. The man was turned away without incident by the paramedics.”
A man is charged with one count of robbery, as well as possession of stolen property over $5,000 and failing to comply with probation.
