Many drivers clocked at more than 50 km/h over speed limit, RCMP say

At a checkpoint near Canmore on Saturday night, officers stopped several motorists driving impaired and far too fast — in many cases more than 50 km/h over the limit, said RCMP Sgt. Darren Turnbull.
In the Drumheller and Strathmore areas, speeders going as fast as 200 km/h were caught, he said.
Turnbull says some people don’t seem to understand that reckless driving can lead to death.
“It’s disheartening as officers, because we see the carnage,” he said.
“All too often when we have to go and notify the loved ones that a member of their family has died in a motor vehicle crash, it’s hard.”
Turnbull says he wants drivers to understand they share the roads with people who may not be as familiar with the highways — so even if they feel they can control their own driving, they can’t control everyone else’s.
Since the Victoria Day long weekend in May, there have been more than 1,000 injury collisions on Alberta highways. Officials say 65 of those collisions resulted in 75 deaths.
