A 43-year-old man is facing impaired driving charges after allegedly narrowly missing colliding with a Hamilton police cruiser.

Police were stopped at a red light westbound on Bridlewood Drive at Governors Road around 9 p.m. Thursday when a vehicle heading east “took off at a high rate of speed straight through the intersection, almost striking the police cruiser,” police said Friday.

As a result, police conducted a traffic stop, arrested the man and brought him to the police station where he failed a breathalyzer test.

He was charged with impaired driving and having a blood-alcohol level of over 80.

The man was not named by police as he was released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.
