A 43-year-old driver from Havelock was arrested after fleeing officers in Ajax early Thursday morning.

On Thursday, March 10, 2016, at approximately 1:50 a.m., officers from West Division spotted a black SUV travelling southbound at a high rate of speed on Salem Road at Rossland Road. The SUV was followed as it entered Highway 401 where it accelerated to speeds in excess of 160 km/h, weaving around other vehicles before exiting at the Westney Road off-ramp.

Officers activated their roof lights and siren at the next stop light, but the SUV, which did not have licence plates, accelerated away from them. The pursuit was discontinued for safety reasons.

Other officers on Squires Beach Road spotted the same SUV as it was being abandoned by the driver. After a brief foot pursuit, the driver was arrested without further incident.

Robert LAURIE, age 43, of Chandos Street in Havelock, is charged with: Dangerous Driving; Fail to Stop for Police; and Drive Motor Vehicle – No Plates. He was later released on an Undertaking with conditions.
