A man died from his injuries following a collision on Hillside Drive South

On Nov. 4, 2018, at approximately 12:30 p.m., East Algoma officers of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a passenger vehicle and a scooter on Hillside Drive South in the City of Elliot Lake, Ontario.

The collision occurred when a minivan collided with a male operating a mobility scooter. The operator of the scooter was transported to hospital by Algoma Paramedic Services. He was subsequently transported to hospital in Greater Sudbury for further treatment. On Nov. 7, 2018, Donald Chartier, 80-years-old from Elliot Lake, Ont. died.

Andrew Gazdik, 55-years-old, from Elliot Lake, Ont. was charged with:

  • Careless Driving, contrary to section 131 of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

The OPP’s Highway Safety Division (HSD) Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) team, consisting of Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) and Collision Reconstructionists are continuing with the investigation.
