Speed limit signA 44-year-old Barrie man faces charges of impaired driving and racing a motor vehicle after being clocked at more than 50 km/h above the posted speed limit of 80 km/h on Perth Line 86 east of Listowel on Monday night.

Perth County OPP said an officer saw an eastbound black Dodge sedan travelling at a high speed just after 8 p.m. After stopping the vehicle, the officer saw an open container of alcohol beside the driver, smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath and noticed “other additional signs of impairment,” police said.

The driver was charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with driving while ability impaired and driving with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in his blood.

He also faces a charge under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario for racing a motor vehicle and an additional charge under the Liquor Licence Act of Ontario for driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor.

His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days, OPP said.

He is to appear in court in Stratford to face the charges.
