A 26-year-old man is dead after a crash in southern Ontario which sent a pickup truck into a quarry.

Provincial police say the collision took place in Haldimand County on Friday when a northbound pickup truck collided at an intersection with a westbound SUV.

They say the SUV left the road and rolled over while the pickup truck continued through the intersection, left the road and fell into the Hagersville Quarry.

Police say a 52-year-old woman who was driving the SUV and a 22-year-old woman who was her passenger were taken to local hospitals for minor injuries.

The driver of the pickup, Mathieu Guimond of Edmundston, N.B., was found inside the pickup truck that was submerged under about seven metres of water at the bottom of the quarry. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say speed and lack of seatbelt use are being considered as contributing factors in the crash.
