A police officer was hurt during an overnight traffic stop after an alleged scuffle saw a male driver get back into his vehicle and drive away.

Peel Regional Police say an officer pulled a vehicle over in the Winston Churchill Boulevard and Erin Centre Boulevard area, as he investigated a possible impaired driver at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Police said a scuffle ensued and the man who had been pulled over got back into his vehicle.

The fleeing driver allegedly struck the police cruiser as he made his getaway, police say.

Police said the officer was not seriously hurt. He was treated at the scene and did not require any further medical attention.

The driver was then arrested at a nearby residence after a short pursuit.

A 24-year-old Mississauga man faces charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle, assault with intent to resist , flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failure to provide a breath sample.

The charges have not been proven in court.
