Blue Water Bridge officials have not reported any major changes to traffic patterns at the international crossing after workers went on strike Monday.

The union representing the 47 employees, the Public Service Alliance of Canada, says the federal bridge corporation is trying to slash benefits in the latest contract negotiations.

The federal agency that operates the span has managers collecting tolls, and says vehicles are passing between Ontario and Michigan normally.

Any traffic delays at the bridge could have an affect on the Ambassador Bridge, but officials there say there has been no increase in volume.

Spokesman Stan Korosec recalls a severe weather event six years ago that created an influx of traffic at the Ambassador Bridge.

“When [Highway] 402 was closed for about a week due to a big snow storm there, we did notice an increase in traffic here,” he said. “The bridge wasn’t closed, but the highway was closed. We don’t know yet if the situation with the strike there is going to cause any backups here right now, but we’re monitoring it.”
