Police have charged two 20-year-old Ontario drivers after they were allegedly caught speeding more than 70 km/h over the speed limit on a Vaughan road, the second time in less than two years.

According to York Regional Police, an officer conducting traffic patrol saw two vehicles travelling side-by-side westbound on Rutherford Road near Highway 27 around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

After crossing Highway 27, the vehicles reached a top speed of 138 km/h. The speed limit on Rutherford Road is 60 km/h.

The officer pulled over both vehicles and the two male drivers were charged with racing a motor vehicle. The men had their licences suspended and their vehicles impounded for seven days. They are scheduled to appear in court at a future date.

The incident happened after police pulled the pair over on the same section of Rutherford Road around 4 a.m. on Nov. 30, 2014. At the time, the drivers were clocked going more than 70 km/h after passing Highway 27.

The men were charged with racing a motor vehicle and also had their licences suspended and vehicles impounded.

In a statement released Wednesday, Police encouraged residents who see incidents of street racing to call 911.

“Drivers who travel at excessive speeds or engage in street racing put themselves and others at risk of death or serious injury when they choose to disobey traffic laws and disregard public safety.”
