A provincial police officer has been charged with assault causing bodily harm after an Oshawa teen was injured during a traffic stop in July.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit says the incident occurred just after midnight on Canada Day when a 19-year-old Oshawa man stopped on the shoulder of Highway 401 after experiencing car trouble.

Two O.P.P. officers arrived at the scene and the ensuing interaction left the driver with a concussion, the SIU said.

The agency says it has reasonable grounds to believe one of the officers assaulted the man.

Const. Scott Hearnden is charged with assault causing bodily harm and is scheduled to appear in court on February 10.

The SIU is an arm’s-length investigative unit that examines any incident involving police that results in sexual assault, serious injury or death.
