A dramatic video that shows a white truck crashing into concrete medians and veering off the roadway while travelling at high speeds on Highway 417 has led to the arrest of an Ottawa man on drunk driving charges.
According to police, a call from a concerned man travelling eastbound along the highway shortly after 9 a.m. on July 22 led to the identification of the suspected vehicle and the arrest of its driver.
The video, which has been posted to YouTube by Ottawa’s Rocco Michelli, is five minutes and 21 seconds long and shows a white Chevrolet Suburban-type truck travelling at high speed along the highway. It repeatedly slams into the concrete centre median.
The vehicle also drifts across lanes several times and appears to cross onto a concrete shoulder which the driver apparently mistakes for the Walkley Road exit ramp.
Throughout the video, Michelli can be heard speaking to someone on the phone and gasping in disbelief.
“He’s hit the inner wall again. He side-swiped it again,” he says at the 38-second mark of the video.
Michelli could not be reached for comment early Wednesday.
Michelli caught the erratic driver’s drive to work on his dashboard camera. In the video’s description he states that he called 911 to report the incident to police.
He said when he saw how badly the driver was driving he felt he had to follow the vehicle and flag its location for police. Michelli followed the driver to a workplace, where he met with officers.
Police identified the vehicle’s owner and had him conduct a sobriety test, which they say he failed.
Martin Simbauni, 46, has been charged with driving while impaired and driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in the bloodstream. The charges faced by Simbauni require his licence to be suspended for 90 days, and he could also face a fine of up to $2,000.
