The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) run by Ottawa and Gatineau police say the two offenses cause thousands of crashes.

Distracted driving was linked to 26,860 collisions resulting in 5,761 injuries and 18 fatalities from 2011 to 2015 while speeding was involved in 15,850 collisions resulting in 3,759 injuries and 54 fatalities, police said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Ontario Provincial Police, Sureté du Québec and Department of National Defence’s Military Police are also part of the Safer Roads Ottawa program.
