A Peel police officer who was convicted of drunk driving and later caught breaking his court-ordered driving ban will get to keep his job.
Const. Alex Metallinos has been demoted for nine months after pleading guilty to Police Services Act charges of discreditable conduct.
Metallinos, an officer for 13 years, will go from a first-class constable to a second-class constable and will lose just under $10,000 in salary.
He was found guilty in December of driving with too much alcohol in his blood in an incident that took place months earlier while he was off duty.
The court fined him $1,000 and prohibited him from driving for a year.
But a month later, Peel Regional Police’s internal affairs division found Metallinos buckling his child into his car with the motor running while off duty, and police say he admitted he was about to go for a drive.
No criminal charge was laid in relation to the incident.
