OSHAWA — The Durham Regional Police helicopter Air One lifts off from Oshawa Municipal Airport.

Officers were assisted by the police helicopter as they tracked a speeding car along Hwy. 401 Saturday night.

A Niagara Falls man has been charged with impaired driving as a result of the incident, which began when motorists reported a Honda Civic swerving into oncoming traffic and running a red light near Bloor Street and Courtice Road at about 11 p.m. March 21, Durham police said.

The Air 1 helicopter soon located the Honda as it sped east on Hwy. 401, swerving between lanes and attempting to pass other vehicles on the shoulder, police said.

The driver took an off-ramp at Newtonville Road, then began driving back west on the 401. Cruisers were able to catch up to the vehicle and box it in, eventually slowing it and bringing it to a stop, police said.

Michael Lidstone, 54, of Appleford Avenue in Niagara Falls, is charged with impaired driving.
