Chatham-Kent Police arrested an impaired Blenheim man who had inserted his vehicle into the annual Santa Claus Parade on 2 December 2016.

On December 2, residents of Blenheim and members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service were getting ready for the annual Santa Claus Parade through the downtown area. Around 7:00pm, officers closed Chatham Street South as the parade was making its way northbound.

Minutes later, a man turned onto the street in front of the lead parade vehicle.

As the man approached Talbot Street, an officer stopping traffic for the parade asked the man to stop, but he continued driving northbound on Chatham Street. A second officer, further down the road and helping with the parade, wearing a Santa hat and driving a reindeer decorated cruiser, initiated a traffic stop.

The officer suspected the man was driving his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and a roadside breath test was administered. The man failed the test and was arrested.

He was transported to police headquarters for further breath tests.

The 55 year-old Blenheim man was charged with impaired driving and released pending a future court date.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service is reminding residents that officers will be out in full force this holiday season in an effort to keep the roads safe. If you’re enjoying festive beverages, please consider calling a cab or Home James at 519-351-3353.
