Rustico Gamat was looking forward to retired life.

With three children and five grandchildren, it’s no wonder the 66-year-old Mississauga man was eager to enjoy more family time.

But that opportunity never came as Gamat, while driving home with his good friend and co-worker Diosdado Pascual, 58, also of Mississauga, was struck and killed by an accused drunk driver. Pascual remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Gamat, known to his family and friends as “Otie,” was the passenger in Pascual’s SUV. The collision between the BMW and SUV happened around 1:15 a.m. at Bristol and Mavis roads, as the two co-workers were returning home from a night shift at Chrysler Mopar in Brampton.

Family members said Gamat was set to retire soon.

The driver of the BMW suffered minor injuries and was later arrested.

Azar Sheikh, 31, of Milton, was taken to hospital with minor injuries and arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. He has been charged with drunk driving causing death, drunk driving causing bodily harm and possession of marijuana. He was set to appear in Brampton court on Thursday.
