An off-duty officer spotted a slow-moving car with a sleeping driver behind the wheel early Saturday morning.

The vehicle’s brake lights were on and it was moving extremely slowly – officers estimated less than 5 km/h, Brantford police Insp. Dave Wiedrick said – on Wayne Gretzky Parkway around 3 a.m.

City police were contacted and conducted a traffic stop, rousing the driver with the cruiser’s siren.

The driver, a 52-year-old Alberta man who was alone in the vehicle, had extremely poor balance and almost fell several times, police said.

He blew more than double the legal blood-alcohol limit, police said, and was charged with drunk driving. His vehicle was seized and driver’s licence suspended.

It was one of two drinking and driving incidents reported by Brantford police from the weekend.

Police were dispatched to a report of two women fighting on Mohawk Street around 3:42 a.m. on Sunday.

One woman told police that her friend had just “stolen” her car. Police located and stopped the car. The woman behind the wheel said she had “quite a lot to drink” that evening.

The 21-year-old Paris woman blew more than double the legal limit. She was charged with over 80 milligrams.
