DRPS completed its first week of the Festive R.I.D.E program, stopping more than 1,100 vehicles and charging 12 drivers with drinking and driving offences.

Week 1 consisted of R.I.D.E. checks in the following areas: Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa, Uxbridge and Clarington with the following totals (the numbers in brackets reflect 2014 first week totals for comparison):

1,165 (1,063) vehicles were stopped by R.I.D.E.
82 (52) people were given Roadside Breath Tests
21 (11) people received “3 Day Suspensions” for registering a “WARN”
3 (2) Novice Drivers with a BAC over zero received a 24hr Licence Suspension
12 (15) people were charged with Drinking and Driving Offences
17 (21) Criminal Code Charges were laid against the 12 people charged
2 (3) Arrested for Drug Offences
3 (8) G1 G2 / Young Driver License Holder Breaches of No Alcohol Condition
21 (33) drivers charged with various Highway Traffic Act offences

Note: Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, anyone charged with a drinking and driving criminal offence will have his or her driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded for 7 days.
