‘It’s just straight out ridiculous,’ says OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt

A driver was caught on video last week on the QEW driving with a load of wood hanging out the back doors of their car, and what appears to be furniture sticking out of the trunk.

A driver carting a load of wood on the QEW last week left onlookers baffled as the rear doors of their car hung open.

David Fafinski posted a video on Facebook showing the driver on the highway near the Red Hill Valley Parkway, heading toward Burlington’s Skyway bridge.

Not content with having the open doors stick out into adjoining lanes, the driver also had what looked to be a piece of furniture sticking out of their open trunk.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt with the OPP told CBC News that he first saw the video Tuesday morning.

“That’s an unsafe vehicle there. Doors open — who knows what could come flying out of there,” he said. “That’s not anything you ever expect to see on the highway.

“It’s just straight out ridiculous.”

According to Schmidt, this is not the first time something like this has happened on a highway in this area. He once stopped a person driving a two-door sport coupe that was carting a couch with a door hanging open, secured with only a seatbelt.

It’s unclear if the driver in this most recent incident will face any consequences. Schmidt said it is difficult to make out the licence plate of the vehicle in the video, and he was unaware if the incident had already been reported to police.
