It looks as though a Durham man didn’t learn a lesson after being charged for impaired driving – with his three children in the vehicle – and was picked up for the same offence less than 24 hours later.
The first incident took place around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 20) when the man was arrested in Whitby. Three children, between the ages of nine to 14, were passengers in the vehicle, police say.
“His breath test registered over three times the legal limit,” reads a media release from police.
The man was charged with operation while impaired alcohol and drug as well as operating while impaired – exceed 80 mg. Though he was released from custody, his driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the pickup truck was impounded.
On Thursday (Feb. 21) at approximately 2:30 p.m., the same male was stopped in the area of Mary Street and Euclid Street in Whitby, driving a different vehicle.
This time, his breath test registered more than 3.5 times the legal limit, police said.
He was additionally charged with operation while impaired – exceed 80 mg; operation while impaired alcohol and drug as well as driving while under suspension. He was held for a bail hearing and that vehicle was impounded.
Police are not releasing his name to protect the identity of the children.
“The number of impaired drivers on our roads continues to be a concern and police are reminding motorists there is a zero tolerance for impaired driving. Since the beginning of 2019, officers have laid 138 impaired driving related charges across the region, including 11 this week,” the media release reads.
“Over the past five years, officers laid an average of 777 impaired related charges each year and DRPS wants to see that number go down. If you will be drinking or consuming drugs, please arrange a ride by taxi or ride sharing agency. Don’t drink and drive.”
