One man is dead after a vehicle went flying off an overpass and fell onto the Hwy. 417 below early Wednesday morning.
The single-vehicle crash quickly snarled traffic on the Hwy. 417 eastbound at the 416 interchange, causing major delays for morning commuters. But by mid-afternoon, all lanes had reopened.
OPP received calls just after 8:15 a.m. reporting of the rollover. The vehicle, a black, four-door sedan, was travelling on Hwy. 416 northbound when it left the roadway from the overpass and crashed onto Hwy. 417 eastbound.
A man in his 40s was found inside the vehicle and declared dead on the scene. (He was originally reported as being in his 20s or 30s.)
Alberto Asencio had been driving along Hwy. 417 on his way to drop off his grandfather at the airport when the two of them heard a loud bang.
“The car just flew off the Hwy. 416 overpass,” said Asencio. “It narrowly missed the three cars in front of me.”
He added, “It’s not every day you see a car fall off an overpass. . . It’s unbelievable.”

The eastbound lanes of Hwy. 417 were closed for about four hours after the crash, but OPP were able to reopen them just before noon. The Hwy. 416 northbound on-ramp to the 417 westbound was closed for about six hours.
A cause has yet to be determined.
The identity of the victim hasn’t been released.
Glad there weren't more injuries today. Coincidently a paramedic from renfrew happened to be right there as it happened #ottnews #otttraffic
