City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service Media Release
On August 1, 2019 the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service launched a traffic enforcement campaign which targets distracted drivers. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of collisions in Ontario and the goal of this traffic initiative is to make roads safer for everyone in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Drivers who are caught driving while distracted by a handheld device can face a fine of up to $1000, three demerit points and a three-day suspension of their driver’s licence. On the first day of the campaign alone, one member of the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service stopped and charged six drivers for distracted driving. While City of Kawartha Lakes Police officers are targeting distracted drivers, they are not turning a blind eye to other driving offences. On August 1st a Kawartha Lakes Police Service officer charged a motorist with stunt driving after the motorist was caught travelling 139 km in an 80 km an hour zone. A second officer stopped and charged a woman who was driving erratically because she was applying makeup while driving on Colborne Street west in Lindsay. The City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service’s distracted driving campaign will take place for the entire month of August.
Fenelon Falls man charged with impaired driving
On August 1, 2019 at 11:31 pm the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service was contacted by the staff of a restaurant on Kent Street west in Lindsay after a customer left the restaurant without paying for his food and drink bill. Witnesses reported to police that the man was also impaired and had left the restaurant driving east on Kent Street. City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service officers located the man a short time later and placed him under arrest. Charged with fraudulently obtaining food, impaired operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with more than 80 mg of alcohol in his blood is 43-year-old Bradley Joseph Lyons of Fenelon Falls. The accused will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice, located at 440 Kent Street west in Lindsay on September 12, 2019.
