Emergency crews and Ministry of Transportation called to scene

The OPP closed part of Highway 403 in Burlington into Thursday morning (Dec. 19) after a large truck hit a highway overpass, causing concrete debris to hit the road and creating at least two more crashes.

All lanes opened early Thursday after inspection and clean-up, police said.

The incident occurred before 7 p.m. Wednesday on the eastbound part of the highway when the Badger vacuum truck hit the Waterdown Road overpass.

Multiple vehicles crashed into the concrete debris that fell from the overpass, according to police.

“It’s a major traffic issue with heavy back-up,” said Kyle DeMatteo, who tweeted about the incident after he drove past it on the westbound portion of the highway.

Halton Regional Police closed the top of the Waterdown Road overpass for more than two hours, but re-opened the road after a Ministry of Transportation inspection.
