Happy 150th, Canada! As people from coast to coast to coast prepare to celebrate all things Canada this holiday weekend, MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada are reminding everyone about the need to plan ahead for safe and sober transportation if they are going to be drinking or consuming drugs.

“The focus this weekend should be on our great country and its wonderful people and communities,” said MADD Canada National President Patricia Hynes-Coates. “No one should see their Canada Day fun end with an impaired driving charge or, worse, with a crash that kills or injures someone.”

Impaired driving is a completely preventable crime. Yet every year, hundreds of Canadians are killed and tens of thousands are injured because people drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada are reminding Canadians that every single person has the power to prevent impaired driving by:

  • Never driving a car, boat, ATV or any other vehicle while impaired;
  • Never riding with a driver who is impaired;
  • Calling 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.

“This weekend, our staff and agents around the country will join Canadians in the celebration of this very special holiday,” said Ryan Michel, President and CEO of Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. “But before the festivities begin, we urge everyone to take a few minutes and plan ahead. With plenty of options available, there is never an excuse for driving impaired. Let’s keep our roads, waterways and communities safe this holiday weekend and all summer long.”

However you are celebrating, please arrange a sober ride home. Call an Uber or a cab, arrange a designated driver, take public transit or stay the night. Revelers looking for a safe, sober and reliable ride home at the push of a button can check out Uber, MADD Canada’s Official Designated Driving App. Visit https://www.uber.com/partner/en-ca/madd-canada/ for more information.
