The YRPS has charged more than 50 people with impaired driving over the last two weeks.
A total of 30 were charged last week, while 23 were arrested from March 4 to 11.
One of the cases allegedly involved an impaired driver that hit a parked police cruiser – with full emergency lights engaged – while the officer had another vehicle stopped for a traffic violation in Newmarket at 2 p.m. on March 13.
“That vehicle was eventually stopped and the driver was found to be impaired by alcohol. The driver was placed under arrest and taken to #1 District headquarters for a breath test, where she blew more than twice the legal limit for alcohol,” reads a media release from police.

“York Regional Police thanks members of the community for helping us stop and arrest impaired drivers by calling 911. We consider these incidents a life-threatening crime in progress and will continue to respond to these calls,” reads a media release from police.
“So far in 2019, more than 600 calls to 911 have helped to safely remove impaired drivers from our roads, which has led to more than 300 impaired-related criminal charges being laid.”
