Ontario police find 20,000 methamphetamine pills during traffic stop

Police in North Bay, Ont. say they searched a vehicle that smelled like marijuana and found more than 20,000 pills of methamphetamine worth more than $100,000.

Ontario Provincial Police said a uniformed officer conducted a traffic stop around midnight on Wednesday and “detected an odour of cannabis” coming from the vehicle.

The driver and passenger were arrested, the vehicle was searched and police said they found thousands of pills they suspect were speed.

Members from the police’s Community Drug Action Team and Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau assisted with the investigation and the estimated street value of the drugs was determined to be more than $100,000.

The driver, 30-year-old Claude Gobeil of Ottawa, faces six charges including drug trafficking, possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of under 30 grams of marijuana.

Adam Villeneuve, 31, of Ottawa, the passenger in the vehicle, has been charged with drug trafficking, possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of under 30 grams of marijuana.

Both suspects were held for a bail hearing Wednesday at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay.
