Parry Sound police handed out nearly 60 charges over the Labour Day long weekend.

Focusing on distracted drivers, West Parry Sound OPP conducted the long weekend initiative from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2.

Under the Highway Traffic Act there are three distracted driving charges that include: Drive, display screen visible to driver; drive, hand held communication device and drive, hand held entertainment device. Fines for these charges is $500 and between three and six demerit points.

Over the long weekend officers issued 58 tickets including: 32 speeding, four distracted driving, four stunt racing charges, two seatbelt offences, seven other Highway Traffic Act offences, three liquor violations, three marine-related offences and three insurance-related charges.

The North East Region OPP issued 755 provincial offences, including 11 distracted driving charges.
