The North Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested six people for impaired driving over the past five days, pushing the total number of drivers charged so far this year up to 52 and surpassing the 49 drivers charged in all of 2018.
The first arrest occurred after North Bay OPP received a traffic complaint in the Municipality of Powassan at approximately 11:45 p.m. last Thursday.
Police say an odour of alcohol was detected on the driver and the officer involved began an investigation into the driver’s impairment.
As a result, Rudi Alexander Morin, 49, of North Bay, was charged with operation while impaired and operation while impaired with a blood-alcohol concentration more than .08.
The accused was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay Oct. 29.
At approximately 1:54 p.m. last Friday, North Bay OPP responded to a single motor-vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Papineau-Cameron Township.
Police say an odour of alcohol was detected and the officer involved began an investigation.
Julie Anne Lewis, 46, of Papineau-Cameron Township has since been charged with operation while impaired with a blood-alcohol concentration more than .08 and careless driving.
The accused was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Mattawa Nov. 13.
That same Friday, North Bay OPP responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 17 in North Bay at approximately 3:35 p.m.
Officers located the vehicle and spoke to the driver. Police say an odour of alcohol was detected and an investigation began.
Thomas Gordon Love, 40, of Petrolia was later charged with operation while impaired and operation while impaired with a blood-alcohol concentration more than .08.
The accused was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear at the North Bay Courthouse Nov. 12.
At approximately 3:45 p.m. Saturday, officers from the North Bay OPP were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere, or RIDE, spot check on Birchgrove Drive in Nipissing Township.
Officers stopped a utility terrain vehicle and detected an odour of alcohol on the driver.
Michael Kleimaker, 66, of North Bay was later charged with operation while impaired, operation while impaired with a blood-alcohol concentration over. 08, and operation while prohibited by failing to have an ignition interlock.
The accused was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear at the North Bay Courthouse. A date for the appearance was not provided.
At approximately 7:42 p.m. Sunday, North Bay OPP received a call to assist the Anishinabek Police Service with an intoxicated person in Nipissing First Nation.
When officers arrived, police say they observed the suspect driving and an odour of alcohol was detected.
As a result, Frederick John McLeod, 53, of Nipissing First Nation was charged with operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs, failure or refusal to comply with demand, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, and driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor.
The accused was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear at the North Bay Courthouse Dec. 17.
Early Monday morning at 12:20 a.m., North Bay OPP stopped a vehicle for speeding on Highway 11 in North Bay.
After police detected an odour of alcohol and began an investigation, Jessica Aelick, 40, of Elliot Lake was charged with failure or refusal to comply with demand.
The accused was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear at the North Bay Courthouse. A date for the appearance was not provided.
The accused also was issued a 90-day Automatic Drivers Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
