OPP shoulder patchA reduced speed zone is in effect north of Sault Ste. Marie.

Highway 17, from about two kilometres south of Highway 552, north 30 kilometres to Chippewa River Bridge, is a designated construction zone, Ontario Provincial Police say.

Traffic lights are set up at Old Mill Bay and Goulais River bridges. Speeds are reduced for traffic heading north and south, reducing from 90 to 70 to 60 kilometres an hour approaching each set of lights.

Fines are doubled for speeding in a construction zone. It’s also an offence to disobey stop or slow signs displayed by traffic-control workers, police say.

The speed reduction is in effect until Oct. 26.
