OPP have identified the man who was driving a ‘wrong way vehicle’ as Jacob Knowlton, 38
A Trenton, Ont. man, 38, is dead after an SUV travelling in the wrong direction crashed head-on into a transport truck on Highway 401 near Bowmanville early Saturday.Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, spokesperson for the OPP’s Highway Safety Division, identified the victim as Jacob Knowlton.
Knowlton was driving the SUV and was its lone occupant. The transport truck driver was uninjured.
The eastbound lanes of Highway 401, which were closed from Liberty Street to Bennett Road as officers investigated the crash, have been reopened. The crash was east of Toronto.
The vehicle was westbound while in the eastbound lanes and was being driven at highway speeds when it hit the transport truck, he said.
The OPP’s Highway Safety Division, along with its Whitby detachment and traffic and crime units, are investigating the crash.
Witnesses are asked to call the OPP’s Whitby detachment at 905-668-3388.
