Provincial police say they’ve laid a careless driving charge after a multi-vehicle collision east of Thunder Bay, Ont., that killed two people and injured four others.

They say the crash happened at 6 p.m. on Monday when an SUV turning into a rest stop off Highway 11/17 was struck by a tractor-trailer and then crashed into a pick-up truck.

Two people in the SUV — 61-year-old Thunder Bay resident Joann Mendowegan and 46-year-old Greenstone, Ont., resident Christopher Towegishig — died in the crash.

Four people in the pick-up truck were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say they have charged the driver of the tractor-trailer, who was not injured, with careless driving.

The investigation continues.
