Shipping traffic on the Welland Canal was temporarily halted Tuesday morning after a van plunged into the waterway.

Emergency crews were called to the canal near the corner of Fraser Street and Canal Road in Port Colborne around 6:19 a.m. after reports of a van in the water, according to Niagara police Const. Philip Gavin.

Police say they found the man who had been behind the wheel sitting on shore. He was transported to hospital.

A crane and officers from the police dive team were brought in to help fish the submerged vehicle out of the water.

Shipping traffic needed to be stopped during the recovery process to make sure the officers in the water remained safe, police say.

Gavin says the service is continuing to investigate what led up to the van heading into the water.
